Early Night Live Sessions, Month of the Horns

Two flutes from ancient Mesopotamia are the oldest musical instruments that exist today. From the very beginning of civilisation wind instruments were an essential part of religious and everyday life of every community on the planet. In Greece clarinet, zourna (oboe like recorder), gaida (pipes) are still very much in use in rural areas while the sound of clarinet dominates most of what we call Greek traditional music today. Jazz also would never existed without the brass bands of the colonial armies that were spread in the vast continent of America. January’s live sessions are centred around two horn players, Thodoris Rellos and David Lynch. Rellos stellar work with the innovative ensemble of Mode Plagal crafted a new sound and created a no man’s land between folk roots and jazz in Greece. Lynch with his own projects and also as part of the Human Touch trio, is always pushing the envelope of creativity either stylistically or musically.
